I don't want to deal with the bullshit of everyday life right now..
I just want to make art

and perhaps eat some popcorn

Help!

How do i interrupt my slow descent into becoming a premature domesticated woman?I am starting to worry about my suburban mom lifestyle becoming like uhh....my lifestyle. Its ruining my street credibility, yo.Like I have been watching endless hours of television sitcoms like friends and the cosby show. I regularly tell my brother to turn his "hip-hopz" music down. I eat arugala salads reminiscent of recipes in Martha Stewart Living. This needs to stop. Should I

A) Stop buying snuggies
B) Persuade myself into a one night stand with a hunky mexican landscaper
C) Throw out all my Yanni cds
or
D) all of the above

tales from abroad

I wanted to have on my blog some stories that I have accumulated from traveling. Here is a story from my journal in Costa Rica 2009.

Manzanillo

I woke up to the mourning (punny)of Michael Jackson. The king of Pop is dead. What a strange concept. Mia and I watched the funeral in a Soda (restaurant) as we devoured our arroz con frijoles. It seemed like the procession was lengthy because the owner of the hostel was watching it 3 hours prior to us arriving to the soda. Costa Rica loves Michael Jackson. His music blares from every shitty transistor radio in every other cabina. It was weird to think that the whole world and millions of people was watching this funeral . Michael Jackson was a universal performer who transcended language. With Michaels death the whole world also witnessed the death of a lost genre of music. Mia and I then went on a hike that took more than 3 hours in a crab/coconut infested jungle. I saw some palm trees that were massive powerful and strong. There were at least 100 years old. Antique trees, in their retirement home of the jungle. (what a nice way to kick the bucket huh). The jungle was my citadel for the evening and removed every woe from the mind. It comforted me like a mother Panchamama and welcomed me with open arms. The humidity stuck to the skin and the silence of the jungle cushioned my soul. This was Pura Vida (spanish for pure life). The howler monkeys ,exquisite fauna and electrifying colors stimulated my retina, mind and eardrums. We walked back to the forest that was then infested with orange sea crabs. On the way back we ran out of water and Mia cracked a coconut on a tree to drink the water. I felt like we were on Survivor as I laughed taking paparazzi pictures of the whole ordeal. ................to be continued

Female seeking

inner peace? happiness? I'm not sure what i am looking for but I know its not here in the suburban hellhole of san jose. I was watching this documentary about a journalist who was trying to find spirituality in yoga. The journalist went to a yogi in India and asked him "How do I become happy?" And the yogi responded ",Eradicate the person you don't want to be, and then you will become one with yourself." So I was thinking about that. And that made me conclude how I don't want to live in san jose. I don't want to be part of a place where consumerism dominates the culture. I want to live in a place where I am constantly exposed to new ideas, cuisine, and art. Not where people have their flat screen television as their priority. Maybe I am just in a post-graduate delirium. But i will talk to you soon!
p.s.
the documentary is enlighten up and it was surprisingly fantastic!

Kale Anyone???

Every since I became a Vegan (or semi vegan) about a year ago I wanted to find a delicious way to cook kale. Kale is known to have some sort of super powerful antioxidant properties. This leafy green is very high in beta carotene, vitamin k, vitamin C, lutein, zeaxanthin, and reasonably rich in calcium. It sounded like a good deal to me so I picked up a bunch (1 buck!)from the Organic Supermarket near my house and tried this delicious recipe. Changed parts of it and created this zingy pesto. This recipe makes a plentiful amount so you can freeze it and use it another day (the frost enhances the kales sweet flavors). Add to Whole Wheat Pasta, Vegan pizza or Sourdough bread for a vergan tasty treat.

The Anti-Basil Kale Vegan Pesto

  • One bunch fresh kale (local and organic if you can. Support your local farmers!)
  • 1/2 cup of almonds (you can use pretty much any nut or even a mixture of many)
  • 1/4-1/2 Cup Extra virgin olive oil
  • 6 cloves fresh garlic
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

And a food processor with chopping blade attachment.
Directions:
1. Start with a pile of fresh, washed kale that has been stripped from the stems.

2. Peel and trim 4-6 cloves of garlic.
3. Chop the almonds until it is of small bits consistency. (i ain't no julia childs so this will do)
4. Add 1/4 Cup of extra-virgin olive oil, garlic and lemon juice (if using) and process again. (Watch the consistency because you don't want it to thin.)
5. Blanch: Toss kale into 2 quarts of salted water that has reached a boil. Continue cooking until water returns to boiling and kale has softened a bit.
6. Remove Kale from the water and rinse with cold water. Put in a Colander and squeeze the water out of the kale leaving it fairly dry.
7. Process once more until it looks like pesto, adding more olive oil for consistency, and salt and pepper to taste.

And voila! You have just created some mega vitamin packed spectacular kale pesto! This one goes out there to all those skeptical carnivores that think vegan food is bland. TAKE THAT ANIMAL MURDERER!!!!
just kidding.......
